Dear Cap, why is it The Damned have been over looked your the best gutarist of your generation & Daves vocals are nothing more but superb + hes so suave.
Pete
Yes, Mr Vanian is probably the best singer of his generation and sometimes it DOES seem as though The Damned are about as popular with critics and media folks as an astronaught in the space station with a case of chronic diarrhea! But you won't hear ME whinging and bleating...... |

At your next shows I wondered if you and the band will be dressing up like Mike Ratledge. That Soft Machine look (shades, mustache & shoulder-length hair with bangs) is once again chic, and you'd look great playing at least one song in Prog Drag, ha ha. But seriously, I loved your anecdote from yesteryear about following Mike around in Cambridge and blowing his mind at stoplights. I nearly died laughing when I read that.
Matt Giarrizzo, Sunnyvale, CA
Nice one Matt - yes, I think we did freak out Mike Ratledge at the traffic lights that time after the Soft Machine show in Croydon (not Cambridge). It was NOT the way that THAT bands fans (a bunch of serious jazz proggers) usually behaved I reckon.... all wearing wigs, shades and false mustaches in an identical fashion to the bloke in the band they were tailing... no wonder when he caught sight of us he put his foot down and got the hell out of there, lol.
For me their best album is 'Soft Machine 3'.... although it may be a little challenging on first listen before long you could be considering it a bit of a masterpiece? |

Dear Captin, I recently got a hat when I went to Sidmouth folk festival and drank a lot of real ale. Was this a wise purchase and will hats be in this autumn? Personally I find its proving to be the solution to summer this year. I case you need to know its an Australian hat, much like a cowboy hat.
Can't wait to see you all at the Forum this year, Its near my house and even the kids got to see you all last year when you were outside for a photoshoot? very early in the morning during the school run.
Dan, London
Well.... I don't know if the solution to British summers is a hat - more like an umbrella these days.
I kid you not ladies and gentlemen - as far as I can gather from scientific weather related articles I have read recently (and I DID go to a science based school so I know a little of what I am talking about here) the British Isles will NEVER AGAIN have a summer as we used to know them in previous times. The 'JET STREAM' (once again Google will come in handy here) has shifted south making the UK's weather patterns a LOT more unpredictable..... ie - s**t!
Blimey, and I remember the glorious summer of '76 when things were really starting to happen for your chums the Damned. Phew it was hot.... week after week of wonderful sunshine. I fear that we will never see the likes of that again.
I sincerely hope I am wrong here but............. |

Cap! I've only gone and ruined the finish of one of my prized geetars, i thought i could be clever and do it gloss black with some halfords car paint, but it looks like a gothic nightmare, uneven and just ghastly. Any tips on how to do this beast up nicely? on a budget mind you!
Deadmike
Who cares wot it looks like.... does it play OK? Sound alright?
I like a guitar when it gets a few 'battle scars'.... I remember going to watch Rory Gallagher playing his gnarled and beaten up old Stratocaster. If a guitar could talk that one would've had you up all night with tales of drunken escapades and gigs that just about happened, etc.
So what if you've buggered the guitar aesthetically.... that's punk rock innit! |

Evening Cap. You've probably being asked this so many times, but what is your opinion on the era of The Damned in which you weren't present i.e. Phantasmagoria etc? I personally feel that songs like Grimly Fiendish were brilliant songs, but how bout yourself? and also, what modern punk bands do you rate? i noticed a blitzkid sticker on your guitar at a gig a while back but who else do you rate?
Benny
I thought the Phantasmagoria era Damned was excellent, possibly a little patchy quality wise but it DOES have some great moments. What a great band this is that can change it's whole style so many times and excel in all of them, eh?
I'm currently listening to
'Send' by Wire
'Diamond Hoo Ha' by Supergrass
'El Perro Del Mar' by El Perro Del Mar
'Ska Fever, Best Of' by Judge Dread
'Fleet Foxes' by Fleet Foxes
'Overdose' by The Miracle Workers
All fine records.... a couple of which are quite 'modern' for me. |
