VIDEO PODCAST
3rd May 2010 |
When the world's smartest newspaper rang me up asking if I fancied contributing to their video podcast site I thought.... OK that sounds like fun, now where shall I film it?
Somewhere strange and off the beaten track for certain. And then it came to me - the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in Kent - for this almost perfect one third scale steam railway is about as eccentric a rich mans folly as they come.
Built by part time racing driver Captain Howey in the 1920s as his own personal train set the route of the line travels from the sleepy Kent seaside town of Hythe heading across the barren Romney sands towards the ghastly sight that is Dungeoness nuclear power station.
Thankfully there's a pub there too where it's advisable to grab yourself a pint - and avoid looking out of the window too often!
But film director extraordinaire Derek Jarman didn't seem to mind the vibes as he made this strange but wonderful place his home during his final years.... and did I tell you I auditioned for his punk 'Jubilee' movie? No? Well my
audition was obviously crap as I didn't get a part but it's a good film all the same - even WITHOUT my participation.
But never mind that - I wonder if the Guardian will let me do another film for THEM? Where
should I take them next I wonder........ |
