CAP'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE
8th January 2011 |
Hi all, 2011 eh? Let's make it a good one if we can.
But looking back, for me 2010 was pretty fun.... the Damned played in Europe and the US west coast and then I ended up supporting the Glitter Band of all people at the end of the year on a short Xmas tour. In fact, jumping up onstage with them belting out the deliciously naughty 'Do You Wanna Touch Me' with all it's subsequent connotations and notoriety was taboo busting heaven I must say!
No matter what their ex colleague might have done those guys deserve a career and I recommend you go and see them anytime you can as it's real rabble rousing singalong stuff. And singer John Springate's a remarkably nice chap for a 'rock star' too. He's not very tall though!
Apart from that I am aware that I haven't made a 'Captain' album for a fairly long time so I am going to dust off the considerable amount of demos I have here on the shelf and see if I can put together an inspiring collection of tunes for possible recording this year. I am well known for being a trifle.... how shall I say.... lazy, so keep at me playmates and I might actually get it done this time.
And in view of this possibility I've been revamping my home studio, adding some bits and bobs that might come in handy. Like a Nord 'Stage' keyboard in stunning red.... a nice pro keyboard full of Hammond and Farfisa organs, which you may or may not be aware are my fave sounds from the 60s and 70s. Oh, and a Melotron.... well, not a REAL one but a lovingly crafted retro computer simulation called M-Tron by www.gforcesoftware.com - yes, let's give 'em a plug - credit where it's due and all that.
At this stage in the jolly old career I'm thinking it's best to stick with the sonic palette I know and love so I'd better find a harpsichord and a jangly 12 string guitar as well sharpish too while I'm at it.
As for touring this year it seems likely that the Damned are never going to do an exhausting 2 month tour of the States (or anywhere else) again so please don't ask us when we're coming back to XXXX, wherever that might be. We will definitely get out and about as much as possible this year as it's our (cue drum roll....) 35th Anniversary so stay tuned to the Official Damned website and come and see us if you can. We are plotting something special for the occasion too.... ssh!
Apart from the Damned site, and the one you're looking at now I am starting to really get the hang of Facebook and Twitter, and I enjoy pontificating on all and sundry, letting off steam occasionally and then reading your comments whether you agree or not. It's healthy to have a point of view... let's not leave it to the 'media' to brainwash us into their way of thinking - it's punk rock to read between the lines and make your OWN mind up.
There's a good alternative news source at www.counterpunch.org which although being a little US centric is full of in depth analysis of international affairs and the like. And I find ex UK ambassador www.craigmurray.org.uk talks a lot of sense so he's definitely worth reading too.
But apart from politics and the state of the planet allow me to wish my beloved Crystal Palace the best of luck for the new year while we're at it..... gawd knows they deserve some after near bankruptcy and points deductions, etc and I hope they and everyone out there reading this has a great 2011.
And if you see me hovering near a bar anytime soon please do not hesitate in offering to purchase me a beverage!
cheers - Captain Sensible |
