CAP'S HELLO MESSAGE
11th May 2011 |
Hello there, it's that old punky 80s popster Captain Sensible here - welcome to my website.
For those of you that might not know of my musical exploits I was (am still) a proud member of punk pioneers the Damned who helped shake up the music industry in the late 70s.... making some pretty decent albums along the way. After which to my astonishment I became Britain's most unlikely pop star courtesy of some ground breaking and occasionally experimental synth pop which if you ask me still sounds remarkably fresh today.
I don't get in the studio so much these days (it's someone else's turn go-dammit) but the Damned did make a lively and melodic album at Jethro Tull's drummers studio on the banks of the River Thames a couple of years back. 'So, Who's Paranoid' it's called and is available signed (if you wish) by my good self from this very website. Definitely worth hearing for the 12 minute long psychedelic tribute to my hero Syd Barrett if for nothing else.
You'll find eye catching Captain Sensible t-shirts there on the merch page too - but I'd better not waffle on about that too much or you'll think I'm turning into a capitalist pig or something. Oink!
A few years ago, as a reaction to Blair and Bush's warmongering I formed my own semi serious political group 'The Blah! Party' but a lack of organizational skills has seen that dwindle somewhat and my political rants now take the form of the odd rant on my Facebook and Twitter pages - links provided here. Like a lot of the class of '77 this angry young man has turned into a grumpy old git. I still have plenty to say though..... and I do enjoy reading the comments that people leave whether they agree with me or not. It's all healthy democratic stuff.
But looking back to the punk revolution of 1977 it seems amazing to me that I'm still twanging a guitar on stages in 2011. I think we were expected to explode onto the scene in a flash of manic noise aggression and then implode and fade away pretty sharpish, which would almost definitely been the case but for the fact that there was simply TO MUCH creativity in the various members of the Damned and the strange but wonderful records we have left in our trail is testament to this.
AND the good news is in the UK we will be recreating two of those albums live on stage in their entirety later in the year. Yes, performing 'Damned Damned Damned' and 'The Black Album', the records that respectively launched punk and goth will be quite a task as they are as different as chalk and cheese sonically but it's something we are very much looking forward to in our 35th anniversary year. Blimey, is it really 35 years? How on earth did that happen?
Anyway, there's other trips being planned around the planet this year too so do try and get to see us perform as we don't tour nearly so much these days. The latest dates can be found here or on the recently revamped Official Damned website.
I'm doing a handful of shows with my own band too this summer..... which means that apart from the rest of my fab songs I get to play 'Brenda', the rambling psychedelic track I wrote with Robyn Hitchcock. Now that DOES sound like fun!
My best regards to all of you reading this - and with a final cry of 'RE-NATIONALIZE THE RAILWAYS!' he was gone.
